Born in Rochester New York in 1866, Barnes moved with his family to North Dakota and took up a life as an itinerant photographer. His romantic vision, gypsy soul and adventuring spirit combined to produce a photographic legacy, a uniquely genteel view of the Edwardian age in the Canadian mountain wilderness.
