Artist Derek Michael Besant
Title Close Range #2/5

Notes
ESTIMATED RETAIL VALUE $1,500 - signed, titled, numbered and artist's chop along bottom; unframed; small tear in margin noted

Reference
A Professor of Visual Arts at The Alberta College of Art + Design from 1977-2017, Besant has created prints, watercolours and large-scale art, shown in exhibitions and as public art projects in Canada and abroad. Since the mid-1990s, he has worked with the new technology available in photographic imaging to create experimental prints and print installations. According to the artist: For several years, I've witnessed how during our winters in southern Alberta, the abundant snowfall in Calgary results in overnight snowploughing of outdoor shopping mall parking lots into the 'mountains'. Exposure to our elements of Chinook winds, more blizzards, sunshine as Spring approaches creates similar topographical effects on these 'mountains' so they reflect the same weather conditions shown in our actual Rocky Mountains. Without the road signage, lamp posts, parked cars... there is an illusion of scale that invites the eye to be seduced into seeing a vast mountain range.
