Biographical Information
Jan Wade ~ [b.1952]
Wade is a Hamilton-born, Vancouver-based artist born to a Black Canadian father with familial origins in the American South and a Canadian mother of European descent. She studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design before moving to Vancouver in 1983 and immersing herself in the alternative art scene. From July 10, 2021 to March 13, 2022 the Vancouver Art Gallery showcased her work in a solo exhibition Jan Wade: Soul Power which was the first solo show by a Black woman in VAG’s ninety-year history. It surveyed some 30 years of Wade’s artmaking primarily with found or readymade objects and recycled materials.
