Biographical Information
Rachel Whiteread ~ [b.1963] British
Born in London in 1963, Whiteread was the first woman to win the prestigious Turner Prize in the UK in 1993. One of Britain’s leading contemporary artists, Whiteread uses industrial materials such as plaster, concrete, resin, rubber and metal to cast everyday objects and architectural space. Her evocative sculptures range from the intimate to the monumental. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2006 and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2019 Birthday Honours for services to art.
