This is an exceptional George Markel, full of detail: from the driving harness and silver and gold-starred bridle to the split reins going to the bit, and gold-starred blinkers. The farmer wears leather chaps, jacket, belt and gloves. After a life of farming Markel took up folk art in his retirement and quickly developed a reputation as an exceptional talent. He died at 96 in 2006.

According to the artist: This piece was included in the exhibition 'Ambient Light', shown at the Edge Gallery in Calgary. I have had a lon and enduring relationship with the Whyte Museum. In 1988, a solo exhibition entitled 'Spirited Places' curated by the Whyte, travelled to multiple venues across Canada. Most recently I was involved in a residence entitled 'Responding to the Whyte' in which I explored aspects of the collection in both vaults and the home of Catharine and Peter Whyte. I am proud to be a part of this history!

My 'nom de plume' is Bigoudi and although my native province of Quebec has shaped the person I am, my adoptive Alberta has shaped the artist I became. Back in Quebec, I have attended the Visual Arts Program at the Université du Québec à Montréal after completing a two-year diploma (DEC) at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Fine Arts and Communications. Since moving to Alberta, I have been largely self-directed in my artistic pursuits - participating in artist-residencies, attending lectures by international artists, and teaching when time allows. I think it is important to remind ourselves to be in awe of the world, to see things 'freshly'. I enjoy looking for beauty in unconventional places, like the oceans from which 'The Deep II' is inspired. Using oil, collage and hot wax on linen, I explore the tapestry, quality and ornate delicacy of microscopic plankton, the earth tinest photosynthesizers which produce over half of our oxygen. In this series, I reflect on the beauty of my subjects and their complex interactions.

Reference
Made from salvaged beehive bases found in a shed of an apoary purchased by the artist. Approximately 160 of these panels were charred and carved by chainsaw, photographed and edited into an animation of a flickering flame. They were exhibited as a wall installation and released to collectors. Firewall was exhibited at the Whyte Museum in 2004 as part of Elemental Inspiration
