What makes an adventure truly memorable? An incredible experience that you return to long after it has passed. Somewhere you’ll not only fly above some of the most astounding scenery in the world, but also land within it, plant your feet on the soil, and roam among the enormous glaciers and mountainous peaks that both inspire and humble. ESTIMATED RETAIL VALUE $200 - Tour for TEN people at The Canadian Museum of Making near Cochrane; Valid from: June 14, 2021 to June 1, 2022; because of sharp corners and fragile moving parts this tour is not recommended for young children.

Reference
A rare opportunity to visit a unique and extraordinary private museum of tools and machines [and a few antique cars], large and small from the Industrial Revolution on, all collected and artfully displayed by retired engineer Ian McGregor. One room is dedicated just to handmade African tools. Some of the oldest objects in the galleries date back to the 1750s. One particular piece is coveted by the Smithsonian. McGregor’s fascination with the interface of art and practical design is evident; many of his objects were chosen not just because they worked well, but because they also look good. As he says, "If you want to leave your mark by the things you made you’d better care how they look because their function will be obsolete soon after you’re gone. Equally as interesting as the artifacts are the stories that go along with them. The museum is located on an acreage about 27 km west of Cochrane in the foothills with a spectacular mountain view.

Artist Christopher Green
Title Christopher Green - Hudson's Bay Camp Knife
Media high carbon steel with brass and wood handle
Size 13.75 x 2.25 in. / 34.9 x 5.7 cm.

Notes
ESTIMATED RETAIL VALUE $1,100 - knife and sheath are both signed with monogram; lot includes Latigo [sheath]; letter of authenticity included with lot

Reference
According to the artist; 'This blade is inspired by the mountain people of Banff. The design is based off a Hudson's Bay camp knife that was popular during the early 1800s to 1870s. I can imagine a knife such as this riding on the hip of Bill Peyto, along for one of his adventures. The blade is forged from 200-year-old wagon wheel wrought iron that has been combined with a high carbon steel for a strong cutting edge. The handle has brass bolsters and domed brass pins. The wood is 3600 year old bog oak; both of these materials are lined with a fibreglass product called Glo. The sheath is hand stitched latigo leather, a process that makes it weather resistant. The leather is lined with vegetable tanned leather and accented with Bison.'

If it weren’t for the Canadian Pacific Railway, Banff might never have existed. To promote the new rail line to travellers, CP invited well-known artists to come out to the mountains, stay it its backcountry lodges, and create paintings of the spectacular scenery. This very rare logo/crest, created in 1949, was once affixed to one of CP’s passenger cars on its famous stainless-steel-clad train The Canadian, which carried people from sea to sea for many decades. Many legendary Canadian artists painted murals for the iconic tail-end dome cars. This crest was given as a retirement gift to a senior executive of CP Limited in the 1970s and has been in the family until now.
